Classroom and Free Wikis
We regret to inform you that Wikispaces Classroom and Free Wikis will be decommissioned on 31st July 2018.
Why?It has been a very tough business decision during which all angles of the Wikispaces site were considered in great detail. Wikispaces began in 2005 and went from strength to strength, being one of the earlier Wiki sites. However more recently, technology has surpassed the site as more and more Wiki sites became available. Over the last twelve months we have been carrying out a complete technical review of the infrastructure and software we use to serve Wikispaces users. As part of this review, it has become very apparent that the required investment to bring the infrastructure and code in line with modern standards is very substantial. As such it is no longer financially viable to continue to run Wikispaces long term.
What’s next?Free and Classroom Wikis will cease to exist past 31st July 2018 23.59 GMT+1. After this date, you will be unable to access your data. Therefore we strongly suggest you take steps to extract any data you wish to retain from the site before this date.
You can export or download your data by following the steps below. Please note that this will download in Wikispaces Format and, if you are planning to upload this onto another site you may find it easier to copy and paste the data from directly your Wiki to your new chosen Wiki site. Please keep this in mind and allow yourself enough time to do this.
In order to export the data from your Wiki, please follow the steps below. Please note that the export tool function is per wiki, it is not account wide. Therefore, you will need to complete an export for each Wiki you wish to save.
- Navigate to the relevant Wiki
- Click on ‘Settings’
- Click ‘Exports/ Backups’
- Select the format you wish to download the file in under ‘Content type’ there are several options available
- Then select the ‘File Type’ relevant for your computer, either Windows.zip or Unix.tgx are available
- Click Export
- Once the data is ready, you will receive an email or Private message on Wikispaces, depending on your settings. ‘Ready for download’ will also appear underneath ‘Status’
- Click ‘ready for download’ to access the download
It can take some time for the export to complete, your patience with this is much appreciated.
You may experience some issues while downloading or exporting your data. Please bear in mind that if you are unable to complete this, you can select a different file type and try again. The alternate may be that you will need to copy and paste content into word (or similar) documents manually or copy and paste content from us to your new Wiki provider.
Please note that we cannot be held liable for any loss of data or corruption caused as a result of using any export tool.
Once Wikispaces has closed the doors for good, your data will be permanently deleted. Therefore, data will become completely inaccessible to yourself, members, users, the public and our engineers.
I have very sensitive data on my site, what will happen to it once Wikispaces closes?
As a result of this, I would highly recommend ensuring that you have exported all of your data before the end date of your Wiki to ensure that you have a copy saved.
The best option is to export the data from your Wiki and save it to your computer and then use the data to create new pages on a different platform. Due to the different settings on other websites, we do not have a way of exporting your Wiki direct from Wikispaces to another site.
Is there any way of exporting my Wiki direct to another host site?
Alternatively, you can copy and paste the content direct from your Wiki to your chosen Wiki site.
There are many sites that are similar to Wikispaces and used for education purposes. We would recommend conducting your own research in order to locate a site right for your needs and set up or contact that company directly.
Are there alternatives to Wikispaces I can use?

Please note that due to team capacity we are unfortunately unable to advise further on alternative sites or assist with the export of your data beyond the information provided here.
Yes it can. Feel free to contact us if you have developed something.
If I can create a tool whereby I can shift all my data from Wikispaces to an external site can this be shared with other users?
Please note that we cannot be held liable for any loss of data or corruption caused as a result of using or creating the tool. Anyone who uses such a tool will do so at their own risk.
Once the site closes for good your work will be permanently deleted from our database. Therefore it is advisable to export your content, as mentioned above.
What will happen to all my work I uploaded?
Content is owned by the Wiki Organizer/s and unfortunately, we do not moderate individual wikis.
I did not create the Wiki but I use it and rely on it, what can I do to obtain content?
Therefore to gain access to a particular wiki you will need to contact that wiki's organizer.
In order to contact a wiki's organizer you will need his/her username to utilize messaging services find more information here:
To enable us to offer maximum support to customers off-boarding from Wikispaces we will be undertaking a phased shutdown approach. This will help us regulate the system load on the export tool as users depart from Wikispaces.
Why are there different end dates for different types of Wikis?
Is there a Forum I can discuss ideas with other Wiki Organizers/ Members? There is a forum you can visit which has been set up by a wiki organizer. Please be advised that this forum is not monitored by or in any way affiliated with Wikispaces.
