Private Messaging

Overview of the Private messaging system
The messaging system is an easy way to contact your wiki members in bulk or to have private conversations with other users on Wikispaces ( or on your Private Label site).

The number in the black global navigation bar at the top of every page is a count of your unread messages. Click on it to review unread messages and get a link to your message inbox, where you can read messages that were sent to you or compose new messages of your own. You can send messages to other users by username, either individually or in groups. Or you can send out a bulk message to all the members of any wiki that you've already joined. And, because this system uses your Wikispaces username, your email address will remain private.

How do I turn off the messaging system for my account?
You can't turn off the messaging system itself, but you can restrict who can send messages to your account:
  1. Log in and go to My Account.
  2. Set your preferences for Allow Private Messages From to Everyone, Only Members of Your Wikis, Only Organizers of Your Wiki, or No One.
  3. Click Save.
I'm a teacher. What can I do to turn off the messaging system for my students?
There is no way to disable the messaging system. However, as an educator, you have a couple of options:
  1. You can change the messaging preferences for each of your students by logging into their accounts and going to My Account. There you can set Receive Private Messages From to No One. Learn more about our messaging system.
  2. You and your school, district, or university can check out Wikispaces Private Label. You will get your own separate wiki environment in which you can create an unlimited number of users and wikis, and you will have the option to turn off the messaging system for the entire site. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, read more.

How do I send an email to all the members of my wiki?
  1. Click the number of unread messages at the top of any page and follow the Go To Inbox link.
  2. Click the Compose Mail button.
  3. Select your wiki from the Add all members of... dropdown.
  4. Type the subject and message content, just like you would for any email.
  5. Hit Send.

Can I send someone a file in a member-to-member message?
Yes. To start, you will need to upload the file to a wiki that the recipient can access. You can find instructions for doing that on our Managing Files help page. Once the file has been uploaded you can add it to a message:
  1. Click the number of unread messages at the top of any page and follow the Go To Inbox link.
  2. Click the Compose Mail button.
  3. Add the file location to the message:
    1. In a separate window or tab, go to Pages and Files.
    2. Find your file on the list or with the Search function, and click the link for that file.
    3. You will see a link after Filename. Right-click this link and copy the address. (The exact phrasing for this option will vary by browser. It will be something like, "Copy link location," or "Copy link address.")
    4. Return to the tab or window with you open message. Paste in the address you just copied.
  4. Finish composing your message and hit Send.
Note: Sending the file in a wiki message does not change the viewing permissions for that file or wiki. Make sure that the recipient of the message has permission to view that wiki and file.
What emails will I receive from Wikispaces?
We try to keep the volume of email you receive low. The email we do send will fall into one of two categories:
  • Transactional (account confirmation, wiki confirmation, password reminder, membership requests for wiki organizers, administrative info and tasks for Private Label site admins, subscription information, etc.)
  • Optional
    • Site news
    • Wiki change notifications
    • Discussion notifications
    • Page change notifications
    • Private message notifications
You can manage all your optional emails from your Account Settings page.
How can I manage the emails that I receive from Wikispaces?
  1. Log in and go to My Account.
  2. Select the Settings tab.
  3. Scroll down to Settings. Change your Email Monitored Changes, Email Private Messages, or Email Site News preferences.
  4. Click Save.
I want to stop getting the email newsletter.
Our monthly site update will let you know about upcoming events, new features, and other valuable information. But we realize that it's not for everyone, so we made it easy to set your own preferences:
  1. Log in and go to My Account.
  2. Select the Settings tab.
  3. Scroll down to Settings and set Email Site News to No.
  4. Click Save.
And if you ever want to start receiving site updates again, it's just as easy to set your preferences back to Yes.

I am receiving notifications of changes to my wiki. How do I stop them?
  1. Log in and go to My Account.
  2. Select the Settings tab.
  3. Scroll down to Settings and set Email Monitored Changes to No.
  4. Click Save.
